I concluded my 2017 posts about Mongolia with these words:
"Where the backpackers trek today, the luxury glamping folks will follow,
and that means one of the major impediments to getting there (the state
of the roads) will get sorted out, allowing all sorts of people to
wander in. These people won't put up with bad roads, and they certainly
won't put up with open air pit latrines, even if the views are superb.
This is economically good from a development standpoint, but ... "
Well, it has started.
The New York Times (click here) had an article today about the boom in tourism in Mongolia, seemingly driven by Millennials. People are actually renting cars! I'm of two minds about this -- I wish the country well, sandwiched as they are between Russia and China and facing one of the world's more unforgiving climates, but on the other hand...
